Grammar- the broad term for the rules and systems that govern how to use english
WORD CLASSES
Noun - naming words that give names to people,objects,places and feelings.
Adjectives- words used to describe nouns
Verbs- many verbs refer to physical actions(run,jump,walk etc), However they can also refer to
'mental actions'(think,feel,imagine) and to 'states'(The house stands on a hill, That seems fair)
SENTENCES
Simple Sentence - contains one clause
Compound Sentence - contains two clauses joined together with a conjuction
Complex Sentence - contains a main clause and a subordinate clause
Subordinate Clauses - cannot stand alone as they will not make sense.
Subordinate clauses are attached to main clauses by subordinating junctions.
SENTENCE MOODS
Declarative sentences - make statements of give information.
Interrogative sentences - ask questions
Imperative sentences - issue commands,advice,instructions etc. They usually begin with the verb and omit the subject.
Exclamatory sentences - emphatic sentences, which in written texts are indicated by the use of an exclamation mark.
Transcript - filled with non-fluency features. An exact representation on speech
Prosodic features - The vocal aspects of speech(volume,stress,intonation,speed) that contribute to meaning
Para linguistic features - Non verbal aspects of communication such a intonation,pausing which help speakers to convey meaning.
